Why Trustworthy AI Synergy?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has achieved remarkable technological advancements in the last ten years, making its way into research, education, work, and aspects of everyday life. However, for AI to earn widespread trust in society, the paramount requirements are the reliability of AI systems, their ethical application, and raising the general competence for comprehending this technology and its impact. Present-day AI systems suffer from challenges such as:

  • A lack of clear criteria for fundamental values such as fairness, responsibility, safety, and privacy
  • Deficiencies in legal frameworks governing AI systems
  • A need for a comprehensive understanding of AI, and AI’s impact on education, work, and everyday life

To address these challenges and strengthen high-quality AI research at UiB, the Trond Mohn Foundation (TMS) and the University of Bergen (UiB) have developed the transversal research program Trustworthy AI Synergy (TAIS), and have funded three new research projects:

TAIS facilitates cross-project cooperation, and draws on synergy between the three projects and other research at UiB, in Norway and internationally, through various collaboration, innovation and interdisciplinary exchange. By providing common meeting places, hosting international researchers, supporting interdisciplinary cross-project young researchers networking, organizing an international symposium, and promoting joint publications and dissemination, this will lead to more significant and impactful outcomes, particularly in the complex and vital domain of Trustworthy AI.

TAIS primary objective

The primary objective of TAIS is to stimulate collaboration and synergy between the academic environments of the three projects and raise awareness of importance of Trustworthy AI, academically and publicly.

Secondary objectives
1) Provide meeting places for researchers across the three projects
2) Host international researchers on themes relevant across the projects
3) Integrate the postdoc researchers into the LEAD AI activities
4) Coordinate dissemination events with UiB AI
5) Arrange an International Symposium
6) Promote cross-project outreach, academically and publicly on Trustworthy AI

Sevran, a representative from the Division of Research and Innovation (FIA).

The project team:

The project team comprises the three leaders of the three TAIS projects and the respective researchers in each of the three projects (e.g., postdocs, PhDs, other UiB researchers). All three project leaders have extensive experience in leading research projects and research teams, supervising PhDs and mentoring postdocs.
